TREEPILOT – Tree Irrigation Planning Software

TREEPILOT is a digital application developed by HAURATON to support municipalities, planners, and engineering consultancies in designing tree irrigation systems for urban environments. It helps create more climate-resilient cities by determining the water requirements of trees and enabling their effective integration into sustainable stormwater management systems.

The planning process is based on a range of input parameters, including rainfall data, site conditions, and the available area for rainwater harvesting. By combining these factors, the application provides a reliable basis for sizing and designing irrigation and water storage systems. TREEPILOT connects sponge city principles with practical engineering workflows, supporting the sustainable use of rainwater in urban landscapes.

The application available in Germany.

Input Parameters for Tree Irrigation Planning

To calculate and design a tree irrigation system, the following information is required:

  • Number and size of trees
  • Available catchment areas for rainwater harvesting
  • Tree location, including local rainfall data (based on the German Weather Service’s KOSTRA rainfall model) as well as site-specific factors such as soil type, sun exposure, and growing conditions
  • Irrigation system capacity to determine irrigation intervals and operating times
  • Duration of the irrigation or dry period.

In addition, users can choose between a simplified preliminary calculation and a detailed design based on the FLL Guidelines.

Results

The application provides a structured tree irrigation design recommendation, including:

  • Calculated water demand for the selected trees
  • Sizing of suitable system components (e.g. filter substrate channels and storage tanks)
  • Overview of the key design parameters and their relationships
  • A documented technical basis for planning tree planting locations

The results are presented in a clear, structured format and can be used directly in project planning and documentation.
