Stormwater Monitoring Devices

The Stormwater Monitoring Device Selection Tool was developed in collaboration with PM Ecology. It enables engineers and designers to quickly select monitoring systems for measuring rainfall, water level, flow, and water quality in stormwater infrastructure, including drainage networks, retention tanks, underground storage systems, open channels, and other stormwater facilities.

In just a few steps, users can identify the most suitable monitoring devices based on the monitoring objective, installation conditions, and required measurement range. The application includes solutions based on advanced radar technology and high-performance online water quality sensors, ensuring reliable measurements even under demanding environmental conditions.

The application supports the selection of devices for four key monitoring areas:

Water Level Monitoring – Radar-based water level monitoring systems designed to measure the filling level of channels and storage tanks, evaluate available storage capacity, and determine the effective flow cross-sectional area.

Flow Monitoring – Radar flow monitoring systems capable of measuring instantaneous flow rate, total flow volume, water level, effective flow cross-sectional area, and flow velocity profiles.

Water Quality Monitoring – Online water quality monitoring systems equipped with advanced multiparameter sensors for continuous measurement of water quality parameters, trend analysis, and evaluation of relationships between individual water quality indicators.

Rainfall Monitoring- Professional rainfall monitoring systems using rain gauges and data loggers to measure rainfall depth, intensity, and temporal distribution in real time. The collected data can be used for hydrological analyses, runoff modelling, and stormwater infrastructure management.

Upon completion of the selection process, the application provides a recommended monitoring solution together with its key technical specifications, installation requirements, power supply options, and available data transmission methods.

The results can be saved for future reference or downloaded as a comprehensive PDF report containing the recommended solutions.

How to Select the Right Stormwater Monitoring Device

To select the most suitable stormwater monitoring device, users need to define the type of measurement, the monitoring location, and the intended operating conditions. The application supports the selection of equipment for monitoring water level, flow, water quality, and rainfall, enabling users to identify solutions tailored to specific site conditions and project requirements.

The following information is required:

  • Measurement type: water level, flow, water quality, or rainfall
  • Monitoring location: underground storage tank, closed conduit, standing water, or open watercourse
  • Installation type: compact unit or cabinet-mounted system
  • Monitoring application: temporary or permanent installation
  • Power supply: battery-powered (with optional solar support) or permanent power supply
  • Rainfall monitoring configuration: a single rain gauge or a multi-site monitoring network

Based on the selected configuration, the application recommends the most appropriate PM Ecology monitoring solution, such as AquaLogger RDR radar water level stations, AquaLogger Flow flow monitoring systems, water quality monitoring stations, monitoring buoys, or rainfall monitoring systems.

For each recommended solution, the application displays a schematic installation diagram illustrating both the installation method and the operating principle of the monitoring system. This allows users to quickly verify that the proposed solution meets the technical and operational requirements of the project.

Results

Based on the selected input parameters, the application recommends the optimal monitoring device and presents its key technical and functional characteristics.

Depending on the selected monitoring application, the tool can recommend solutions for:

  • Water level monitoring in underground storage tanks, manholes, and closed conduits
  • Flow monitoring of stormwater, wastewater, and other liquids in closed conduits and open channels
  • Water quality monitoring using multiparameter sensors
  • Rainfall monitoring using professional rain gauges and telemetry systems

For each recommended solution, the application provides:

The results are presented together with a product gallery, datasheets, and additional technical documentation. A comprehensive PDF report summarizing the selected solution and the calculation results can also be generated.

The report can be used as supporting documentation for monitoring system planning, engineering design, drainage network analysis, and the evaluation of stormwater management infrastructure.
